Poll Results: Who Comes Next?

November 16th, 2009

We asked which Marvel team you wanted to see covered now that the 90s era X-Men have been announced. Here’s what you guys and gals had to say:

Now we have X-Men. Which team do you want to see next?

  • The 90′s X-Men that weren’t covered already (17%, 34 Votes)
  • Young Avengers (17%, 34 Votes)
  • Inhumans (14%, 29 Votes)
  • Modern Avengers (Mighty, New, Initiative) (11%, 23 Votes)
  • Classic Avengers (East Coast, West Coast) (10%, 20 Votes)
  • Classic Thunderbolts (9%, 19 Votes)
  • Classic X-Men (7%, 14 Votes)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (5%, 11 Votes)
  • Kang and the Kangettes (5%, 10 Votes)
  • Modern X-Men (3%, 7 Votes)
  • Modern Thunderbolts (2%, 5 Votes)

Total Voters: 206

Always nice to see a close race, and you don’t get much closer than a tie. The top slot was shared by two teams that each gathered a hefty chunk of the votes: the remainder of the 90s X-Men and the Young Avengers.

Jubilee: Snubbed Again

On one hand, you have the rest of the 90s X-Men, with the name I’ve seen floating around most being Jubilee. She hasn’t gotten the Minimate treatment at all, whereas other names that pop up, such as Bishop, have at least seen a release. It really doesn’t matter which mutants get passed over whenever an X-themed wave pops up, there are always dozens of fan favorites who fail to make the list. Come on DST, give us some expansions through Toys R Us!

Young Avengers: Where Are You?

On the other hand, you have one of the most popular teams running around the Marvel Universe (though they can’t seem to keep a book): the Young Avengers. We’ve even gotten one of them (as a variant, unfortunately) in the past, so we know DST is willing to dip into the roster. There have been a grand total of 8 members on the team, so it’s not like we couldn’t get a majority knocked out in one wave. Vision 2.0′s getting lonely.

In third, we have the Inhumans, who have shown a recent surge of importance in the Marvel cosmic universe. There’s plenty of colorful characters to choose from, but I’m sure that Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, and Crystal rank high on many people’s lists. On the bright side, Black Bolt will be arriving soon with the 31st wave of Marvel, so maybe the royal family won’t be far behind.

Fourth, we have one of the largest pools to pull from, the Modern Avengers, meaning the Mighty, the New, and the Initiative. We’ve gotten a healthy dose of the New Avengers already, with a few members of the current Mighty already on the books as well. The Initiative, with a host of new characters as well as plenty of classic Avengers, could really stand some coverage.

Fifth, we have another large pool of characters: the Classic Avengers. These are the ones most of us grew up on (and some of us won’t forgive the current batch of writers for changing them). We’ve gotten some of them with the 16th wave, featuring Thor, Scarlet Witch, and others. Others have arrived later, such as Hawkeye and Vision. But there’s still plenty more ground to cover. Avengers Assemble!

Sixth, and only one point shy from the fifth spot, are the Classic Thunderbolts. These are the iconic ones, the team of villains who would eventually seek to be heroes. Zemo, Songbird, and all your favorites from before Norman Osborn took over the team. We haven’t gotten too much coverage here, with mostly the ones who carried over into the Osborn era getting the Minimate treatment, while Beetle/Mach I-IV, Fixer, and the rest going under the radar. Songbird and Zemo are probably some of the most requested figures now. Hopefully, rectification will come soon.

Seventh, we get the Classic X-Men. These are our favorite mutants from their early appearances. A Classic X-Men box set is on the way, featuring the first team from their first appearance, but there’s still plenty of other mutants who want their chance, from classic versions of Havok and Polaris, to Banshee and Sunfire from their earliest appearances.

In the eighth slot, we have the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Marvel cosmic scene has been pretty popular since Annihilation, so this team would go over well with many fans, I’m sure. There are some classic Avengers characters represented on the team, so there’d likely be some good cross reference here too. Kang the Conquerer even aided the team in a recent issue, which brings us to…

Ninth, the fictitious team of Kang and the Kangettes. Some people will take Kang however they can get him, even if he’s wearing a dress. I suspect that if DST ever gave us Kang, most of us would have nothing left to complain about.

Tenth, the Modern X-Men. Outside of Wolverine, we haven’t seen much coverage here outside of the Astonishing X-Men wave 13. There are plenty of young mutants who have been raised to the ranks of X-Men, along with plenty more fan favorites who have suffered an update or two over the years.

Rounding out the poll, we have the Modern Thunderbolts. Pretty much anything from the Osborn team onward. We’ve gotten plenty of coverage in the Osborn lead team, with only Songbird lacking a ‘mate at this point. Pretty much no coverage at all for the current team, though this isn’t surprising considering the current crop scrapes pretty close to the bottom of the barrel. Mr. X? Headsman?

That pretty much covers the thought process on several of Marvel’s teams. There are literally way too many to mention them all in a poll though. I could fill weeks of just going over the lists of teams I neglected to put in previous polls, such as Alpha Flight, the Defenders, X-Factor, and countless others. And there are plenty of villain teams that need some coverage too, though it seems to be standard operating procedure at this point to limit villains to only a handful of slots each wave, so I don’t see a Masters of Evil or a Brotherhood wave happening any time soon.

For this week, let’s look at what we got in Marvel Series 34 and decide just who is essential and who can be tossed:

Marvel Series 34: Who Do We Like?

Choose how ever many you deem necessary and we’ll see how they all stack up in seven.

Now we have X-Men. Which team do you want to see next?

  • Young Avengers (17%, 34 Votes)

How about a set of all characters that haven’t been made yet? An Avengers set! The line-up:

    Tigra / Black Knight
    Moon Dragon / Falcon
    Kang / Grim Reaper

    Alpha Flight Set:

    Sasquatch / Guardian
    Aurora / Northstar
    Snowbird / Shaman
    Chase – White Sasquatch

4-pk – Byrne era Brotherhood of Evil Mutants:

    Blob / Avalanche
    Pyro / Destiny

    Defenders II 4-pk

    Nighthawk / Hellcat
    Son of Satan / Gargoyle

Jubilee doesn’t even have powers anymore, who cares.

There are too many current heroes that don’t have mates yet, please make them first.

Oh and please, please, please, no more Spider-man and Wolverines. We got a lot of them already.

  4. Twisted Two-face

Oh!! How about an “Our bad…let us fix this” wave??

    Baron Zemo/Songbird
    Kang/Mockingbird
    Banshee/Sunfire
    Banshee/Nightcrawler

Sounds mighty fine to me. Hell, it’d clear up my Most Wanted list for a long time.

  5. Zenaku

    brotherhood four pack:

    toad, pyro, avalanche, new mystique

    weapon x four pack:

weapon x w/ headgear etc.), sabretooth (adimantium claws), maverick, omega red or new lady deathstrike

    new carnage/ jackal
    vengence/ blackheart
    masque/ mandarin
    falcon/ tigra
    wizard/ trapster
    annihilus/ klaw
    nightcrawler/ banshee
    sinister/ x-man
    x-factor havok/ x-factor polaris

oops, that’s a few too many for a wave but hey it’s my two cents. so maybe a FF villain set, or x-villain/ x-men-who-need-be-made set. and we all know Ghost Rider needs some love, so how’s about a wave w/ ol’ flamehead’s allies and villains? (plus a bike)

  6. Agent Smith

All great suggestions. It’s painfully obvious that Art Asylum caters to the X-Men and Spider-man crowds. I understand that’s what most fans want. Most of these will never see the light of day. By time we have the 100th Wolverine, Ironman or Spider-man will we even see 1 of these. When Disney bought Marvel what did the news say? Marvel has over 5,000+ characters in their rich history? Most of which we’ll never see, but how many have actually been made? I venture a guess of about 150 not counting each variant of a character.

    @ Ben Lasher

I think you’ll find Wolverine and Spider-Man to be necessary evils when it comes to keeping this line moving. Would we be talking about who will be in the 35th series of Marvel Minimates if the biggest name we had for series 10 was Forbush Man?

Every now and then, the big names have to be wheeled out to bring in the casual buyer to help pay the bills so some of those more obscure characters can surface. And you won’t find a cheaper Minimate to produce than Spider-Man. He’s usually just a blank Minimate with Spidey clothes painted on, though recent outings have added a slip over mask.

  8. donsolo

    The Hood/Madam Masque
    Swordsman/Mantis
    Banshee/Moira MacTaggertt
    Baron Zemo/Songbird
Agent Smith has some great picks but theirs got to be a way to make Puck cut the lower legs ofor something how a bout a new mold
    then we could get…

    PUCK/ROCKET RACOON\
    TOAD/FRANKLIN RICHARDS

  9. Agent Smith

I would’ve picked Puck, but he wasn’t one of the original six. Puck can be the chase! There’s rumors of an Alpha Flight 4-pk. The only problem with that is we’ll get 4 and we’ll never see the rest. The same for the Inhumans. I’d love to see the others but I fear we’ll only see Black Bolt. Maybe Medusa eventually. Mantis would be awesome. I forgot about her. How about Red Guardian – the female version from the Defenders? I’d have no problem with more Spideys or Wolvies as long as the other half of the 2-pk was a classic character never made before. I wouldn’t care if it were Prowler, Kangaroo or Molten Man. I just want to see new characters. I want to complete my Avengers, Defenders and X-Men from issue #94 – Sunfire and Banshee. Put me in charge and they’ll be some changes! More villains, please. The Bring on the Bad Guys box-set was terrible with only one new villain.

  10. Ramseesthegreat1

@ Agent Smith….I agree that the villians boxset wasn’t all that it could have been, but all the villians included were an improvement on the originals.

Also, I would second your self nomination if you could insure me that we will get a Whirlwind/Klaw two pack.

    Who the hell is Kangaroo?????

  11. drgnrbrn316

    @Ramseesthegreat1

There’s been several Kangaroos over the years. All of the sucked.

  12. Agent Smith

Kangaroo was a lame Spidey villain. All he did was leap and jump similar to the Toad like his namesake. Maybe super strength too. Didn’t Spencer Smythe perform the enhancements on the original? I digress. Whirlwind and Klaw are on my ‘must make/have’ list. How about a Masters of Evil 4-pk? Add the Melter and Power Man – the original evil one – or the Grim Reaper with his second costume (dark purple).

  13. Ramseesthegreat1

Can already picture that set now (Grim Reaper is a must).

    Release date Winter 2010………….
