We asked which canceled license you wanted to see return in 2010. Here’s what you had to say:
Which canceled license do you want to see continue in 2010?
- DC (68%, 116 Votes)
- Street Fighter II (18%, 30 Votes)
- Rocky (8%, 14 Votes)
- Speed Racer (4%, 7 Votes)
- 24 (2%, 3 Votes)
Total Voters: 170
It seems there are some DC fans in the audience. I guess there’s no surprise, since DC probably has the most potential out of all of the licenses that have fallen by the wayside. With a cast of characters large enough to rival Marvel’s, DC would certainly have the staying power. The DC Direct line was actually a pretty good approach to Minimates. It got rid of the much dreaded variant figure and gave a healthy mixture of mainstays and lesser knowns to keep all sorts of fans interested. Of course, the lesser knowns can hurt you too, if you go too obscure without a good balance of star power. We’ll probably never know for sure just what got DC’s plug pulled, but out of all the licenses we’ve seen fall, it definitely had the biggest following.
In second place is the also popular Street Fighter II license. What caused this line’s demise has sparked many a debate, with theories ranging from character selection being too obscure (or not spread out enough), retail support being spotty at best, or just not having a large enough fan base. Whatever the case, there was some potential to the line, in that it met the “colorful costume” quota that comes built into successful Minimate lines. And looking at the arguments and debates about this line’s demise, you can’t deny that there was a fan base. Still, it just doesn’t have the following that DC does.
In third, we have Rocky. I wonder how many of the 14 votes just wanted to see the third box set released, which I will admit was to be the best of the license. Still, the movies do have a cult following, I just don’t know how long the line could go on with variations of Sylvester Stallone in various stages of brain damage.
In fourth, there’s Speed Racer. I guess there were some fans here too. If AA could have put the product out closer to the time of the live action movie’s release, it might have sparked more interest from collectors, but given the success of the movie and the accompanying toy lines, probably not.
In last, we have 24. People in suits with guns. They made for some cool accessories, but I’ll admit that there wasn’t much interest here. Add that to declining interest due to the show not being on the air around the time of the Minimate releases, and its no surprise this one faded gently into that good night.
So, there you have it. If we get a chance at resurrecting a license in the new year, we want to see the return of Batman, Superman, and the like.
This week’s poll actually stems from a question I received but held back from Fan Mail Friday because I wasn’t sure how to respond. So, I’ll let you, humble reader, answer for me. Here’s the question, from BenderB who asks:
Whats the best way to store minimates? Something air tight like Tupperware or more porous like a shoebox?
I’ve stored them both way, but I’m unsure of any benefits that either would have. A porous box would let the Minimates breath better, whereas an airtight box would prevent environmental damage, like smoke or moisture. What do you all think?
What is the best way to store Minimates?

I store in a tool box that holds screws, washers, etc. I is portable, durable and easy to access.

i store mine in soup containers they are air and that is why i voted for it, but does it matter is the real question. The soup containers are really cool though they have a pop off lid and can hold 20 or so minimates. which is good becasue i can keep all my spidermen separate from my batmen (turf war you know).

Since I mainly collect the Marvel line, I’ve been slowly working on plans to customize a rectangular tupperware container into a SHIELD mini-helicarrier/Minimate storage. I’ll post pictures if I ever get around to finishing it…

The container store has great display cases that are 3 levels high & sell for $7-8 ea. keeps the dust off & with a little fun tack your minimates aren’t going anywhere.

With regards to the last poll – I’d love to see DC and Street Fighter come back. I’m loving Blackest Night and would love to see some of the other lanterns and Kyle (I prefered the costume he wore after he became Ion for the first time but I’d take the current one JUST to get a mate of him). As for Street Fighter, I’m a HUGE SFIII fan and wish we could have gotten some of the REALLY obscure characters like Alex, Dudley, Ibuki, Yun and Yang as well as some of the other favourites like Vega, Sagat, Balrog and Cammy.

Regarding the Rocky Minimates:
I would have liked to have seen more box sets and two packs from the other movies. Prototypes of Rocky & Paulie dressed in black and gold training gear and Apollo in fancy clothes looked great.
And I keep my Minimates in air tight cases.
