Holy Man-Bat update Batman!
As cool looking as these Battle Beasts Minimates are, I still feel something is missing.
I recently saw pictures of the Takara Beast Fight line and thought:
Now these are Battle Beasts!
I guess it’s the game element attached to it and all-characters-build-from-the-same-base look.
I also feel there is some missed potential with the Minimates.
If they had stuck with the all-characters-build-from-the-same-base look we would have been able to easily swap parts between the beasts and come up with our own custom warriors/armies.
All of the parts on the new Battle Beasts are definitely interchangeable. If they’d all had the same central body, there wouldn’t have been any reason to switch them. We’re trying to provide more interchangeability, not less.
Of course Minimates parts are interchangeable.
That’s part of what makes them so great.
I just think that if you only made the head and hands animal specific and made their armors non-animal specific it would have been easier to make different combinations.
Say you make a bear warrior in a cool looking blue armor I could think: hmmm, I want a whole army of different animals in that blue armor.
Using “my” idea I would only have to swap 3 parts per figure to make them look good.
With the current sculpting (which looks great) I would be asking myself: Hmm, do I change the feet on this one? Or: Damn! I will have to repaint this and that part to make it look good.
I’m just saying that making the Beasts more uniform would have been a reason for me to think: Yeah, I want the DST Battle Beasts instead of the Takara Battle Beasts!
Currently I’m thinking: I want the Takara Battle Beasts instead of the DST Battle Beasts!
To give a different point of view: I really am a fan of the MAX line and it did embrace the idea of more uniform Minimates, but seeing the current state of the MAX line perhaps customers like me are in the minority and your current idea for the Battle Beasts is much better.
Time will tell…
Sorry, we wanted to make this line more interesting.
And you succeeded: great sculpts and a comic book/story so people can care about the characters and get interested in the figures.
Still, when you choose the use a familiar name like Battle Beasts it also comes with certain expectations.
Perhaps the Battle Gators look less interesting than Vorin & Co, but I think they are a lot closer to what people expect to see when they hear/read “Battle Beasts”.
