Art Asylum has posted the latest Q&A with DSTChuck, answering a wide range of questions covering topics from video game franchises to Paris Hilton.
Below are the highlights:
- No plans for Army of Two.
- If DST were to tackle another video game franchise, it would probably be a variety of chacters in an assorted series of 2-packs (Editor’s note: think something similar to the Sony assortment, only hopefully with less contempt)
- No plans for X-Men Evolution
- Cartoon licenses are always possible, even if the show no longer airs.
- Ball still in DC’s court for more Minimates.
- DST have actually considered anime licenses before (possibly Akira and Evangelion).
- Movie licenses tend to follow the pattern of being a property that DST likes, or the movie property liking Minimates.
- A Paris Hilton figure was almost done for House of Wax.
- A lot of input from the various factions in DST are required on whether or not any given license should be obtained.
- Movies don’t have to be blockbuster hits to be considered, so long as they carry enough cult appeal.
- Nintendo isn’t interested in Minimates at this time.
- No room for Ninja Turtles Minimates, since several other companies hold the license.
- Santa ship was canceled. Other plans in the works for the pirate ship.
- Success or failure of the Walking Dead would likely have little effect on possibility of other Image properties, since they’re all independent from each other.
- Big announcements are usually saved for the big trade shows, but timing doesn’t always allow it.
- Lucas Arts not interested in Minimates either.
- Chuck wants more Femme Fatales.
- AvX TRU box set should be in stores this year.
- DST is prepared to carry the Walking Dead as far as the fans are willing to buy it.
- Always room for more Spider-Man.
- DST is in talks regarding a few video game properties.
- Have not pursued a straight Mortal Kombat deal (Ed. note: does that mean they tried for some sort of crossover deal?)
- No one has ever asked for Squirrel Girl before.
- Chance for more Ghost Busters down the line, but they don’t have rights to the car.
- Deathlok has been discussed once or twice.
- Icon Heroes are the one calling the shots on the Thundercats license.
- No plans for Dazzler in her disco duds, but she’s on the list.
- No plans for anything from the Total Drama franchise.
Could you please explain the “Sony assortment, but with less contempt” remark? I’m curious and not aware of this story.
In the not too distant past, a series of 2-packs based on Sony games were produced. For whatever reason, in any Q&A or other discussions around that time, it didn’t sound like DST was too thrilled with the Sony assortment. Not sure if there were problems behind the scenes with Sony, if DST just didn’t like the characters they had to choose from, or something else entirely, they just came across like they were glad to be done and over with.
So hopefully, if another random assortment of video game characters is produced, DST has a better time with it. Its hard to get excited about something if the folks doing it sound like they had their arm twisted.
Thanks for the info! I have the Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank packs but wasn’t aware of the behind the scenes stuff.
There was no behind-the-scenes stuff. It was a tricky line to work on, with four different creative teams providing input on one wave of figures. Nobody’s arm was twisted, it was just a difficult project, but it yielded some great Minimates.
i find it hard to believe no-one has ever asked for Squirrel Girl. The comment about cartoons even if they no longer air is interesting though- i kind of want to see Rick Jones from the 90s hulk cartoon
So write a message to Ask DST.
There is no guarantee that we’ll ever see a Minimate of Rick (from the 90s hulk cartoon), but it’s the least you can do.
As for Squirrel Girl, I do believe it was once said on a panel or in one of the Ask DST editions that we would never see a Deadpool Minimate. Perhaps humor on their part or maybe a way to provoke a response to see how much in demand the Minimate would be.
